Winter has surely set in, now that large parts of Europe are having a not so wonderful experience with it (casualties, shelter, accidents, …). But for those unafflicted, there’s not only fire and heating, but also good ol’ Metal to warm those ears. From the cold north Falconer comes with its Folk-laden Metal. Headless Beast joins us from Germany, Midnight Priest from the suffering Portugal, Al-Namrood from the hot Saudi Arabia, Absurdity from France, Orne and Satyricon also from the cold north (Finland and Norway), Dodecahedron from The Netherlands and Mare Infinitum from the even colder Russia. Once upon a time, back in October 2010, one of our listeners going by the name of Rob Ankrom, suggested we make a Goof/Mirth Metal episode. In other words, it doesn’t always have to be serious songs. In Metal you can make a song about anything: love, life, war, peace, politics, fantasy, science fiction, history, death, sickness, happiness and so on. Several bands don’t take themselves too seriously and obviously made some goofy songs. So, in today’s episode, you’ll find Dethklok, Tenacious D, Edguy, Green Jelly, Swine Of Satan, Jaldaboath, Powerwolf, Ten Masked Men, Beatallica and Massacration. Well, we haven’t played much Metalcore or some other styles, since we’re either not fond of it or just don’t have enough material or knowledge about it. 2012 is still young, so there aren’t that many releases yet. We’ll play new material along the way, of course. 2011 is behind us. It has been a marvellous year in terms of releases. Many albums were put out, many new bands made it to the surface and oldies were against present to show that they’re not planning to call it quits at all. Amon Amarth, Stratovarius, Nightwish, Dream Theater, Devin Townsend Project, Mastodon, Esoteric, Powerwolf, Evile, Cynic, Týr, Taake, Nervecell, Insomnium, Hell, Symphony X, Obscura, Krisiun, Wolf and many many… MANY more, too much to name, released new tunes upon us. Each genre had its representers and even we don’t have full knowledge of this. In any case, like before, each members of the TMC crew chose 4 bands – yes, it was hard, we could fill many episodes – that would be (a portion of) our view on the past 12 months. It wouldn’t be the MetalCast if we only played the obvious and the big, now would it? So enjoy this selection and be sure to let us know your favourites of 2011. Alrighty, EP 233, the last before we take our annual winter break. We’ve got new Nightwish material, Folk stuff from Germany, Russia and Sweden (Lyriel, Severnye Vrata and Vintersorg), and more. For example, there’s Viikate who play Melodic Heavy Metal with Schlager Influence (talk about originality ), the UK formation Nine Covens delivered some Black Metal at our doorstep, together with their fellow countrymen from The Meads of Asphodel and the Americans from Wolvhammer. Last but not least we have two Avantgarde Metal bands, one from Brazil (Omfalos) and the other all the way from Indonesia (Kekal). Enjoy this last episode of 2011, have a great time during the holidays and may 2012 be, for all of you, a year of positive happenings, excellent health and success in your occupations. The German Heavy/Power Metal band Iron Savior is back, indeed. The American Progressive band Cynic also released new material recently, as did the Italians from Ancient Bards. Our dear Si found two bands for you extreme Metal lovers: Infestus and Wold. While Marcus added Lantlôs and Thy Catafalque. Judit travelled to Sweden where she found Royal Jester, a new Power Metal formation and last, we have Polina who came back from The Netherlands and Australia with Nemesea and Elm Street. We can keep this simple. Some time ago we got a suggestion from Blake Porter, one of our listeners: a True Norwegian Black Metal or Pioneers of Black Metal Episode. So, we put our two specialists in those domains to the test and they threw some names and songs on the table in a matter of seconds. Days are shorter, temperatures decrease, it’s getting winter soon (still a few weeks away, though). The classical composer Vivaldi wrote symphonies about the four seasons, but the seasons also inspired and continue to inspire many Metal bands, be them Black Metal, Folk Metal, Power Metal, Doom Metal, and so on.The link with Pagan Metal (which refers to the lyrics, of course) is very easily made, hence the presence of Pagan Reign (defunct since some time), Draugr and Heathen Foray. They are joined by the Swedes of Sabaton, Draconian, the international formation that is Dragonforce, Luca Turilli (yes, again), and more (incl. Jon Oliva’s Pain). All have written songs where winter plays a role, be that as a theme or events that took place in this particular season. So make yourself comfortable and may this episode warm you so hell does not freeze over.

EP 229, regular and varied. We’ve got 2 symphonic extreme Metal bands from Russia, the Black/Thrash outfit Abigail from Japan also made it onto the playlist. There’s of course the experimental Metal of the Norwegian formation Musth, for which our beloved Marcus wrote a review. Rhapsody Of Fire parted ways with half its line-up several months ago, but Luca Turilli is working on a comeback of (his) Rhapsody. In the meantime, since the album is due June 2012, let’s look back at how his solo career took off with a song from his solo debut release. Other than that, there’s Shining, the French formation Akphaezya, the Swedish Wolf, the Belgian Progressive project Epysode (with members from a.o. EP 228, the first in our quest to the “10th anniversary episode”. Let’s go! What have we got this time? Death Metal, Black Metal, Power Metal and even Deutschrock. Indeed, Deutschrock, or Rock ‘n’ Roll sung in German. The Brazilian Death Metal masters from Krisiun put out a new album recently, called The Great Execution. Probably the most diverse album they put out so far? Also, Finnish Melodic Death Metallers Insomnium released the follow-up to Across The Dark. Last year the Italian Power Metal formation Secret Sphere released Archetype and is currently set to record a new album. But let’s venture into the Czech Republic for the Doom band Silent Stream of Godless Elegy and continue to Taiwan for the Black Metal of Chthonic, to then return to the UK for Dark Forest, Rosicrucian and Neonfly, while coming to rest in Brazil with Almah. 2006-2011, a historical period in the era of podcats, eh, podcasts. Looking back at how we started, we’ve been through quite some rides. Lots of music to choose from, lots of bands, and many more songs. Big names, upcoming bands, bands that split-up, big projects, solo projects, and so on. Starting out as a regular show with news and music, after a while it became rather obvious we had to concentrate on the tunes, as news is plentiful to be found on the interwebz. Hence allowing ourselves to create specific episodes around certain themes, nations, bands, etcetera. You, our faithful and loyal listeners, grew in numbers so rapidly we had never foreseen this. Your comments and suggestions made us proud and confirmed we were, sorry, are doing a great job. To this day, your feedback is greatly appreciated. Episode 226 – Short Songs

The length of a Metal song is not important, though you can guess pretty correctly for certain genres. Doom and progressive are more prone to lengthy tracks, while other styles can keep it more moderate, like 4-5 minutes or even less. Many bands also have intros and interludes on their albums, which are meant to be short. So, after the long songs, we take a look at the other end and throw in a bunch of short songs. It’s not only Grindcore or Death Metal that keeps things on a leash. How about the Speed Metal band Animetal from Japan? Or the Finnish Black Metal formation Impaled Nazarene? The Irish Cruachan also managed to limit the amount of Folk, as do the bands Morbid Angel and Napalm Death when it comes to Death Metal. And so we found many more, enough for several episodes. As you can imagine, EP 226 will be longer than 10 songs. Enjoy!

Another Special, yeehaa! Yes, the Legends of Metal. Anyone can instantly name tens of bands who have had a major impact on this great style of music. We made a Pioneers episode some time ago, where we focused on bands that started or were co-responsible for starting a specific style in the world of Metal, be that Heavy, Progressive, Doom, Black and so on. Many of them are also legends of their craft, but in this new episode the emphasis lies more on the bands we all know, whether they started a genre or just helped to further promote it. New weekend, new load of Metal. We’ve got recent material from Edguy, who released Age Of The Joker three years after their last output. Then there’s the Folk/Power Metal of Falconer, the Progressive Death of Stone Cirle, the raw Black Metal of the Germans from Endstille and Sinner’s Hard Rock. Rounding off is done by Cobalt, also active in the Black Metal league as well as Wolves in the Throne Room, the Hard Rockers from Burn, the Italians Thrash band Arthemis and the Thy Catafalque’s Avantgarde view on the music. It’s Graspop weekend and so Kobe and Polina couldn’t, once again, reserve time to host. Neither could Marcus, as he too has a busy weekend. Thankfully mr. Several new releases have come out so far, and as we sort of neglect the wonderful genre that is Doom Metal, this episode has a bit more of that. One year and a half ago we made our first Historical Special (EP 139), playing songs which dealt with events or persons of the past. Bands like Ex Deo, White Skull, Primordial, Sabaton, Iced Earth and more were featured. Now we bring you our second Historical Special, which still deals with the same idea: persons and events from the past. There’s the French Black Metal band Abstrusa Unde, the Death Metal formation Nader Sadek from Egypt (yes, new territory is being explored), Aorlhac from France and Angizia from Austria. It’s a blessing to have Si and Marcus on the board, else where would be find such obscure bands? *lol* This gets countered by more established acts like U.D.O., who recently put out a new album called “Rev-Raptor”. The American band Twisted Tower Dire also released new material, while the newly formed Symfonia and the Japanese Knights of Round round it off. In the past it seemed Marcus had a patent on finding obscure and very underground bands, which after a while gained a broader fanbase and so on and got signed by known labels. But the longer our new host Si is in service, the more he seems a tough competitor for Marcus’s input. Or better, he complements our Brazilian warlord. Newest examples are the French band Belenos, the Russian formation Butterfly Temple, Northern Oak from the UK and Dibbukim from Sweden. The Irish Folk Metallers Cruachan recently put out a new album, “Blood On The Black Robe”, and Marcus got in touch with the band for an interview. Completing the list are Swashbuckle, Golden Resurrection, Visions Of Atlantis, Eden’s Curse and the Doom Metal of Sleep. So, once more, a pretty diverse collage with an emphasis on Folk/Pagan influences.

This is the first in a series, you could say. There are of course many labels out there, underground and on the surface, which makes it possible to create a truckload of specials, basing on the number of bands each label has (had) on its roster. The Dread Lair is mainly focused on extreme Metal (Death, Black, and variants). Therefore you won’t hear any Power or Progressive, for example. This year it’s again in June, as usual, and more specifically from the 24th ’till and including the 26th. On the bill: Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Kreator, Arch Enemy, Whitesnake, Journey, Black Label Society, Opeth, Cavalera Conspiracy, Iced Earth, Moonspell, Arkona, Amorphis, Pain, and many many more. And here it is, our 200th episode! Woohoo! No. 100 was a personal selection of the best songs, or most liked ones, we played in the 99 preceding ones. This time the idea popped up that again we should make a (personal) selection… of what we learned from each other’s tastes via the MetalCast. That is, the songs/bands that were new to us (depending on the crew member) and thus pick a song from those respective bands. As you can imagine, we’ve played a whole ocean of songs so far, so making a choice was not as easy. Each of us picked two songs, so in a way this episode is a trip back in time, but also shows that even we are not all-knowing on our own. This one was requested by a Mr. Thomas Kelley, one of our listeners, asking to compile a list of bands with which he/we/you (?) grew up with. Latin Metal or Metal with exotic influences. That was the basis for this episode. While there are many bands that incorporate such elements into their compositions, it’s not always easy to find those bands, let alone find them appropriate for this episode. One example our quest originated from was Diablo Swing Orchestra. And so the crew searched wherever they could and found bands and songs that would make this a very interesting Special. Once again we explore the boundaries of Metal, or better, the exotic terrains of Metal. And we’ve got another regular this time, with a nice balance between extreme stuff and more listenable songs. Several bands have so far brought out new material: Destruction, Shakra, Degradation, Sequester, Lifelover, etc… Of course Europe is taking the lion’s share again, for obvious reasons. If American (incl. South), Canadian, Asian or even Australian bands don’t have their release(s) made available in Europe or by other means, then we cannot play them. We would love to shift our focus on bands outside of Europe and each of them can always contact us to be played. But I guess you’ll agree that Europe still has a lot to offer, in various genres. To counter we added a few bands from across the Atlantic. In any case, even your suggestions are still very welcome if it helps to broaden and diversify the playlist. Keep on rocking and stay tuned.

Kobe said “Go!”, Tim said “I can add 10.” The others were happy with having more free time. And so it happened. There’s of course plenty more that can be added, but since new material has been acquired and bought, it would be a shame to not spread the word about those bands. A word of thanks in any case to Vesa Ruokangas from Violent Journey Records from Finland for providing the songs of Ordog and Cyphosis (for this episode). You’ll see that Scandinavia is well represented this time, but that’s also because it’s one of the regions where Metal is grand and continues to spawn many bands in several genres. We had a Hungarian Special in 2007 (EP 29), but since then not that much Hungarian Metal has been played. The Folk Metal band Dalriada just released a new album, which we couldn’t ignore. The initial plan and suggestion (by Kobe) for a Southern Special meant playing songs from countries in the south, like Spain, Portugal, Italy, South America, etc… the warm regions, the more exotic stuff. One musical example, even though they’re from up north, is Diablo Swing Orchestra. Alas, our quest led nowhere. Or better, it never took off to venture into those regions and find similar material, aka Latin Metal. But we’ll find enough songs some day. Until then, the decision was sort of made to make it a Southern Rock/Metal Special then, since that’s what everyone knows when referring to this style. Black Label Society, Rebel Meets Rebel, Orange Goblin, Down, Alabama Thunderpussy and several more made it onto the list. So get set to have a fun time. Cheers!

Our last Nation Special dates from June 2010, when we were in The Netherlands. Since then we got a request (or two, by Ishaan Kumar) to travel to India. Now, not a lot is known about the scene there and of course we had enough work trying to find bands from that country. Thanks to the brilliance of our beloved Marcus and Si, a tracklist could be compiled. You’ll notice that most material is to be cataloged under Extreme Metal (Thrash, Death, Black), but luckily there is countering in the form of Power and Progressive Metal. The year 2010 has come to an end. As usual, the market was flooded with releases, too many to list them all, let alone listen to them all. And like before and as it happens each year underground talent comes to the forefront to help carry the flame. Some succeed, others fail miserably, so to speak. Big names continue to put out quality material, others had a dip, it seems. The opinions are again divided, but this past year was one where melodic Metal stood out, this in the styles Heavy, Power, Progressive. But the extremer sorts also delivered their share to counter as much as possible. While we played lots of stuff from several of these styles, it is logical lots will not be featured. We keep our objective standing: diversity is key and we tried to make the playlist accordingly. Back from our Sunday church, we soldier on with the intensity and devotion of before. 2010 is nearing its end, but that doesn’t mean we ran out of material. Food for everyone, from Helstar, Grave Digger, Dark Moor over Apocalyptica and Helloween to Bilocate, Deathspell Omega and more. We travelled quite a lot: Germany, Czech Republic, France, Jordan, Spain, USA, Finland, Ukraine and Norway. Or better, we sent our dear Si to look for some unknown material. His flights to Jordan and Ukraine (and back) went very well, though he only had his tent to sleep in. We couldn’t risk giving him funds, for fear of him spending too much. Si, the newest addition to the crew, made his debut with the excellent Underground Black Metal Special. But his eagerness for more is hard to stop at the moment and with the help of several of you – to be precise, Kelly Hoffart, Brandon Archer, Andrew Helinski and Andrew Bowcock – there was enough material for him to put this new episode together. Religion is a sensitive subject, especially the last number of years. Many kinds exist with each many followers and one not always agreeing with the other. Either way, because of the suggested material it became clear the episode would focus on christianity, in a more positive light. Not the anti path. The examples are legio and even if you’re neither religious nor a christian, in the end the music is still very much Metal. And that’s what matters. To each his/her own, as the saying goes. How did this or that genre come about? We tried to pick some bands that were pioneers at the time of their founding, even if some have already split or changed style. Metal has many genres and subgenres, but we tried to aim for the main ones: Heavy, Power, Thrash, Death, Black, Doom, Gothic, Progressive, Industrial and Folk. You may hear very familiar bands, which is logical as we’re dealing with Metal here. This means, Metallica, Morbid Angel, Fates Warning, Skyclad, Candlemass, Bathory, Mayhem, Helloween and others that started a genre or helped it spin off from another. Yes, the choices were legio, but you need to start somewhere and as usual, this is merely one view on Metal’s history. The key element remains enjoying the tunes.

Thrash is hot again, lots of new bands bringing back old school Thrash or even playing a modern version of it. Our first Thrash Special dates from March 30, 2008 (episode 55) and since there’s lots of Thrash out there and thus lots not yet played, we thought the time was right for a follow-up, so to speak. Yep, we’re keeping it international, even though we could fill an episode with only German bands as well. Death Angel was requested but nothing new, as we didn’t have Relentless Retribution yet. We do now, so we’ll play something off that album later. We also added Violator, Dew-Scented, Gama Bomb, Annihilator and several others. tune in and bang the head that doesn’t bang. Cheers!

Wow, it’s been more than two years since our first Movie/Film/Soundtrack Special, i.e. episode 67, 22nd of June, 2008. We presented you with songs from Metal bands that were used on the official soundtrack albums of movies/films like Mission Impossible II, Spun, Hostel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and more. This time the idea arose for a sequel, but one normally doesn’t pay attention on such tracks, especially if they’re on the regular studio albums from the respective bands. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rage, Black Sabbath and others were played in 2008, today it’s Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse, W.A.S.P, Tesla and more. A long time ago we got a request for a New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) Special. At the time our collections weren’t that big in that domain, so we first worked on many other episodes until the time was right to go back to that famed period that spawned many bands and influenced many bands that were formed years later. The request specified the period around 1980, but again due to collection reasons we tried as much as we could, but had to add songs from a few years later to complete the list. Last weekend Kobe travelled to London to meet with Polina, mainly for the Bloodstock festival. Korpiklaani was among the interviewed bands, so you can here our hosts have a chat with the band. But the plan was also to record some episodes together, so we would have proper dual hosting as opposed to connecting via Skype, for example. While under the heavy influence of booz (yeah, Polina is a quite a drinker, we never expected this, but alas… ) the idea arose of having a booz-based episode, hence Alcohol Special. Several months ago we got the request from a certain Marc J. for a second Melodic Death Metal Special. The first one being episode dates back to the summer of 2007, but since then we’ve played many Melodic Death Metal songs, from both big names and less big names. As usual, we looked around to see what in our collections could fit the bill and we did find interesting material. Indeed, you cannot avoid the big bands like Amon Amarth, Into Eternity, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, and more – well, we did ignore the last three in favour of less known bands – to create a nice mixture of old and new. With the summer having started, the festival season is now on the roll again. Graspop and Hellfest ended only recently, but there’s more coming up, like Bloodstock, Wacken and …too many to go to without losing too much money. Anyway, in this context our beloved Polina was hit by the sun and thought it would be nice to have another Live Special. Our first one was in December 2007 (EP 43), pretty cold to play outside then. No. 2 was broadcasted in February 2009 (EP 98), not exactly hot either, though at that time the seasons didn’t know which came first, so winter had a tough time hanging on back then. Episode 164 – The big 6

Back in February, a listener who goes by the name Harry Haza Williams requested a special with the big 4, aka Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. Since these bands are currently on tour together (for the first time ever!), it would indeed be nice to have all four be represented in one episode. But there was an internal disagreement here, as Testament was another choice. But then you’re forgetting about other bands like Exodus, Heathen, Forbidden, Death Angel, etc… So we made a final cut and put the big four plus Testament and Exodus on the list. All in old and new versions. A sort of back-to-back list. No happy tunes here, only heavy riffings, fast drums, aggressive vocals and more along those lines. Enjoy this somewhat historical episode!

The first Dio Special focused on the man’s work with his own band, DIO. This second and last part of the tribute concentrates on Ronnie’s activities in other bands and projects: Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, collaborations with other bands/artists, etc… While Dio has made and sung many great songs with several bands, we at the Metal Cast did not want to follow the classic path of giving you a playlist of the hits and typical songs. We’re not the only ones dedicating an episode to the voice of Metal, hence trying to seek less known stuff and even adding non-Metal songs from way back in the day. This episode shows that Dio didn’t always need heavy guitars and pounding drums to show his skills. So tune in and enjoy the uniqueness of a special voice.

Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010): the king of Rock ‘n’ Roll, the little man with the big voice, the voice of Metal, the horns aka \m/. A man with a lot of integrity, passion and drive. He has touched many people, made them laugh and cry, gave life meaning, and so much more. Words are not enough to describe it all. On a musical level, the man has been active in several bands, even before his Metal career. Since he was such an active person, one episode wouldn’t do him or his work justice. This is part one, an episode with only DIO songs, i.e. from his own band. We tried to cover each period, from Holy Diver to Master Of The Moon. Ok, Angry Machines was skipped for some reason. DIO made many classics, but we chose to select the more “unknown” songs or less played songs. Fact is that you cannot go wrong with any DIO album. Enjoy and check back next week for Dio’s other works.

Germany has Wacken (and several other festivals), Slovenia has Metalcamp, France has Hellfest…and the UK has Bloodstock! This year’s edition takes place from 13-15th August. Two stages again: a main stage with lots of big names like Behemoth, Rage, Doro, Gorgoroth, Ensiferum, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Sonata Arctica, Twisted Sister and many more. And the Sophie Lancaster stage with smaller, but not less passionate bands like Benediction (Death Metal veterans), Enforcer, Killing Machine and more. As a sort of preview we again present you a diverse offering of bands and styles, from Black over Power to Folk Metal. Everyone must go at some point in life. Being a musician in the world of Hard Rock and Metal can be tough. It requires persistance and dedication, plus staying with both feet on the ground. One’s skills are tested each time and many have shown to be very good at what they do (singing, guitar/keyboard/bass/… playing, drumming, etc…). Metal’s history is filled with great names, bands and musicians themselves. However, several of them had to leave at an earlier stage, earlier than foreseen, than needed, than desired. Quorthon, Chuck Schuldiner, Cliff Burton, Euronymous, Criss Oliva, Vitek and very recently Peter Steele are just a few names. Hence this tribute to (some of) the fallen ones, who brought us great music. Hail and R.I.P.! \m/

Following a request by Ola Haakon Svendsen from the Norwegian band Musth, who play what you could call Schizo-Metal, the idea arose to make a Weird Metal Special. Obviously, most of the material came from our Brazilian centipede. An interview was recorded, but the sound quality couldn’t allow the interview to be used in this or any other episode. However, Musth are represented in the list, together with several other bands who play a mix of several styles, coming from Europe, Japan, the USA and Canada. Sigh, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Le Grand Guignol, Lifelover, Stolen Babies, … names not immediately sounding very Metal, yet it’s the music that says it all. Avantasia recently released two albums, The Wicked Symphony and Angel Of Babylon. They are parts 2 and 3 of the trilogy that was started with The Scarecrow. Once again Tobi saved neither cost nor effort to create something extraordinary… depending how you look at it. In that context our beloved Polina had a word or two (or more) with the man himself and if it wasn’t for the time-limit they could have gone on for a few hours more. The past weeks there have been about 2-3 cries for a (new) Black Metal Special. Indeed, we made one back in the day, but due to unexpected circumstances we had to take it down. Anyway, the Danes are part of this group and have several quality Metal bands among them, in various styles. Some examples: Panzerchrist for Death Metal, Manticora for Power Metal, Artillery for Thrash Metal, Nortt for Doom Metal, King Diamond for Heavy Metal and so on. One of our listeners, Noah Jensen, suggested this trip. Sadly, though, no King Diamond or Mercyful Fate. Black Metal all the more. Overall, you’ll be surprised again by the featured bands. Finland is a country where Metal is heavily appreciated, even in the mainstream. The country has spawned and continues to spawn quality in several genres, from Power Metal to Doom Metal. Happy New Year to you all. 2009 has been an awesome year in terms of Metal. Feel free to agree or be wrong. Litterally thousands of releases were put out and it was, as usual, not easy to hear them all, let alone buy them all. Like last time, we each selected four tracks to be spread over two episodes. 24 songs for one would be too long and too heavy in terms of Megabytes. Again it was hard as we all have at least 10-20 albums we wanted to play songs from. So even if band x or y isn’t represented doesn’t mean we didn’t find it worthy. Whereas previous episodes had lots of melodic songs, mainly from the Power and Progressive Metal genres, this time we steered clear from them (or as much as possible) and ventured into more dangerous zones, in which our quest was not one of birds and bees. Aggressive vocals, skull-crushing riffing and devastating drums, in snowy and sunny settings, not forgetting a bloody touch as finish. 2009 still isn’t over yet and the scene still provides us with new material. Belgium is a small country, yet has lots of Metal bands in the underground. We presented you a small selection back in 2007, with Episode 26. Mainly Thrash, Death and Black reign in this scene, though you have several Heavy Metal bands here and there as well. This time the episode is again filled with Extreme Metal, though with enough variation (from Progressive to Black), even if some digging had to be done. After All is in the list again, because they asked so nicely. But there’s of course more to be played, even if our (Kobe and Tim) collection is quite small, to be honest. Although requested via Facebook by one of our loyal listeners who goes by the name of Andrew, we have been playing with the idea of a Folk/Pagan Special not too long before his request. Folk/Pagan Metal has been hot for quite some time, not in the least because of Paganfest, Heidenfest and bands like Korpiklaani, Amon Amarth, TÃ½r, Eluveitie, Ensiferum and many more. But next to those obvious choices, we would like to show there is much more out there, equally deserving the attention, though not always having the same means for it. A new genre special, this time offering an ear on Neoclassical Metal. This has been suggested, but we’ve been playing with the idea for some time, yet it wasn’t that easy to instantly find enough, let alone the right kind of bands. Neoclassical Metal is based on the works of classic composers like Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven and others, and you’ll find bands from all over the world implementing these influences. One big example is Yngwie Malmsteen, but there’s also Rata Blanca, Dark Moor, Rhapsody, and many more. As usual, there are known and unknown/less known bands/artists. Neoclassical Metal is another domain which we need to explore more. Life is about learning, no matter which domain. Enjoy the show, give feedback and stay tuned.

It’s been a little while, but we’ve got another interview… in the pipeline. Due to higher powers, it has to be rescheduled. So, no "Tim Owens’ adventures in Metalland" feature today. Other than that we’ve got another load of excellent Metal – including a few new things from 2009 -, mostly with a rough edge (Melodic Death, Doom, Black, … from Akrea to Void Of Silence) on one hand, going for a more melodic touch on the other (Axel Rudi Pell to Theocracy), for you to check out and add to your collection. Times grow busier outside of TMC, but rest assured that the suggestions we’ve received so far are being dealt with and the result will be ready in due time. This Death Metal Special is the result of a request by one of our German listeners, Nikolas Wille, even if another brutal episode was planned for the near future. The bands he requested have been played a few times (especially Death), and we had a Technical Death Metal Special not too long ago, so we opted for other bands that donâ€™t fit the “Technical/Progressive” banner, unless for a late newcomer (Obscura). “The Crucible Of Man”, the return of Matt Barlow in Iced Earth. Lots of talk came with that happening and the album should make many fans happy again. Because of this upcoming release our dearest Polina had an interview with mainman Jon Schaffer. For those who liked Owens, we added a track off the “Framing Armageddon” album. Other than that it’s a regular episode, like we’ve done several times so far, providing a good balance between melody and heaviness. Next to older material you’ll hear a couple of new songs as well, inline with the international spirit of Metal. Enjoy and do leave a comment about what you liked or didn’t like.
